A festive gathering that celebrates music-themed films arrives in Carson City beginning Tuesday, delivering top-notch features about music and musicians, styles, songwriting and music video making.

The Jukebox International Film Festival is the place music and flicks collide, bringing enthusiasts and artists together from across the country to the capital city for three days, offering free showings, meet-and-greets and more.

The festival is presented in conjunction with Jazz and Beyond: Carson City Music Festival, a three-week, multi-venue concert series underway in the capital city. JIFF is designed to compliment the music festival by presenting films that celebrate music and musicians.

The film festival runs this Tuesday through Thursday, August 20-22, at the Bob Boldrick Theater inside the Carson City Community Center.

The films are free to watch. Go here for the 2019 selected films that will be shown. In addition to 25 films from 11 countries being shown, visiting filmmakers will be offering up their experiences and advice in this diverse collection of programs.

JIFF, as it is also called, is produced by Wired Wednesday Digital Arts Association, which has been holding short filmmaking competitions similar in format to the popular films for the past eight years.

There will be two workshops that will focus on acting, and creative ways to make films on small budgets. The panel discussions are both in depth looks at various aspects of filmmaking, with one panel focusing on the ins and outs of securing the proper permissions to use copyrighted music in films.

The filmmakers will share some of their horror stories in this area. JIFF is charging a nominal $5 a person for each workshop and panel discussion, or a discounted rate of $16 for all four. Proceeds go directly to the filmmakers for their valuable time and insights.

An awards ceremony will be held at the conclusion of the Festival. Tickets are available for purchase in advance and at the door.

In order to qualify, filmmakers will present narrative films (features and shorts) that must, in some way, incorporate musical themes, such as storylines that focus on musicians or performers or songwriters, music-oriented settings or locations, or other celebrations of music.

Documentary films (features and shorts) presented at the festival, will focus on real life stories of musicians or performers or songwriters, or include stories about music-oriented events, settings or locations, or otherwise celebrate real life music and musical events in some way.

Music videos featured in the festival are up to 7:30 minutes in length.

JIFF's partnership with Jazz and Beyond, the annual month-long music festival, has earned organizers the nickname "Beyond Jazz and Beyond," as JIFF starts the week as the jazz festival draws to a close.
